When customizing a motorcycle in California, do the accessories need to be DOT approved?

Friday Oct 31, 2008

I want to customize my motorcycle with new lights, fairings, windshield, etc..
I have been looking at accessory sites and some of the items say “not DOT approved.”
I am in California and I want to make sure whatever customizations I do are legal.

Do I need to have all DOT approved accessories?

All the technical/mechanical parts need to be approved, fuzzy dice optional.

as far as lighting to be 100% legal u need the DOT approved stuff. But dont be a panzy as long as the equipment is there the cops wont bust your balls over it being DOT approved. Technically an aftermarket exhaust is not DOT approved and is illegal but everyone still does it. its not that big a deal. THe manufacturers write not DOT approved to cover their own asses

David A is only half right. Exhaust doesn’t need to be DOT approved. Most places have sound requirements and some have emissions requirements. As long as your exhaust meets these, you will be fine.

As far as lights go, yes, you have to use DOT approved lights. Most places don’t require turn signals on bikes, though. Check out your local DMV for more info. I really doubt anyone is going to pull you over for an illegal tail light unless it’s so small you can’t see it. Generally, lights have size requirements.

I ride a non-DOT approved bike in a very strict state (Virginia).

Be very careful… you are in the most bike restrictive state in the country, and others are following suit. Daytona now outlaws vertical side mount plate frames… Myrtle Beach has 44 PAGES of new laws and amended ones clamping down on everything from novelty helmets to loud pipes (meant to destroy bike week). If you are not DOT, or EPA emission and noise certified you are open to the discretion of troopers wherever you ride… and punishments can range from $1000.00 to impounding.
