Okay, so my son's Godfather has been living with my husband and I now for a little over 3 months. My husband and him work together. Currently, my husband has been gone on business training for almost 7 weeks now, with 1 more to go. Our friend has really been a huge help to me around the house in the aspect that he helps when I need it as far as my son goes, his Godson.
Since he has been living with us he has not paid rent or contributed to the paying of the bills either. I have a heart and therefore it's hard for me to tell him to go. He truly is a nice guy.
About 3 weeks back he had told me that he saw I was having some problems with my new car and that as a "going-away gift" he wanted to pay to have my car fixed. (We're all leaving this summer and moving to different states due to our careers.) I had objected and in response he said, "you don't have a choice." And so, I was very grateful.
Now since then, he has brought a Harley Davidson Super Duty pick-up truck and his Mini Cooper sits outside my house, making my neighbors mad because this man is not my husband and now he has 2 cars that are taking up their spaces. He cannot park in the driveway because my husband will park there upon his return!
2 weeks ago, our friend mentioned taking my car to a mechanic he knew at "Merlin's" but we never did go due to him having to work through the weekend. I have already taken the car to the dealership and Firestone to get quotes on the work that needs to be done and I had let my "roommate" know. (This was now, weeks ago.) I'm being told I need my brakes worked on and my timing belt changed.
Anyway, LONG story short, I still have not had the car worked on because as a SAHM, I don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to money and with my husband being away, we need to save, save save.
Our roommate has not brought up the car or the "going-away gift" since he first mentioned it.
I do not drive the car anywhere anymore because my brakes squeak and the steering wheel shakes so it just sits in my driveway on a daily basis.
I have asked MANY people what to think about the "gift" and they have told me to accept it, it is a generous offer and he might as well contribute in some way seeing as he is currently getting a free ride and has been for the past 4 months now.
My problem is not knowing how to ask about the work that needs to be done. Does the offer still stand? Should I go about my own way as I was trying too before he made the offer? Do I tell him, as a married couple with a small child, that it's time to go?
I'm just needing a bit of advice as to where to go with this. Its a wonderful offer, yes, but why hasn't he came through on it if I was told, living here, he has the money?
I wonder!
That is a tough one, you could be honest (nicely) and just casually bring the gift up. I think that he should do something to contribute and fixing the car could even things out for you guys. He could be waiting on you to bring the issue up again.
Hope this helps!

Inspired by another question which got best answer chosen before I could answer, hum hum, you know who you are. (joking)
Does anyone see a connection between marketing and the way people view adoption?
I had stated in my answer to that question that marketing is a powerful tool and the industry has hired some of the heaviest hitters to do their talking.
I pointed out that Harley Davidson uses almost the same technique. People camp out for days to sign up for new model bikes. The hipe surrounding this is intense. There are long waiting lists to get new model Harley Davidsons and people are willing to pay top dollar for the priveledge of getting one of them.
I also pointed out that one person posted about the subtle coercion techniques used while she was going through an agency. She admitted that they started off talking about how selfless and wonderful surrendering mothers were, but by the time they were done, we were all crack whores who didn't deserve a dog let alone a kid. (adlibbing there a bit) but you get my point.
Marketing is a powerful tool used every day to get you to buy the latest Swiffer product, or Tides new scent, why would you not believe that adoption agencies would do the same thing? They are paying big money to have their message heard, they want the biggest return on their buck as possible.
Just because I'm a surrendering mother doesn't mean I don't understand a perspective adoptive mothers situation, I think it is the one area we have something in common. Empty arms are empty arms, and I understand that. I wanted nothing more than to be a parent.
So does anyone else see the connection? In 35 years, adoption went from costing a few hundred dollars with NO medical bills paid "gifts" to tens of thousands of dollars and "ALL" medical bills paid.
Do you really think their main concern is finding homes for children or just keeping themselves in business by using tools like pre birth matching? What a way to track future income, it's brilliant, but what does it really say about what they think of us, the people who use their service?
Yes, much about current adoption practices employ the most sophisticated sales and marketing techniques.
Much of what is done to pregnant women considering adoption is what I (as a former sales/marketing professional) was taught in sales seminars for years.
One of the MOST powerful techniques is "assuming the sale". If you use language that assumes you've made the sale, say a woman who might give her child to other people to raise, she'll feel that that the sale is a 'done deal' and there is no way to back out.
With the agencies, it starts right away with referring to a pregnant woman as a 'birthmother' repeatedly.
