I have a scotts steering damper on my yam R6 do they help and what for?

I bought motorcycle used that came with a scotts steering damper that somebody bought aftermarket and installed are they really needed will i notice a difference and when and how -what is popular setting as i dont know where to set it or anything…

they're good man, lots of bikes are coming from the factory with them now. patrick is wrong saying that if it didn't come from the factory with one, you don't need one. Does that also mean that older cars that didn't come with airbgs won't be better with aftermarket airbags installed? of course not. a steering damper is a good thing to have no matter what. If you put it on it's lightest setting you won't even notice it's there. btw, the lower the number the lighter the setting on yours. There is both low speed nd high speed circuit, so you cn turn down the low speed circuit so it doesn't hve n effect when you're just turning slow in a parking lot or u turn or whatever, but if it starts to shake fast it'll work. I would set the highspeed circuit to 5 or 6 and the low speed to 3 or 4.

headshake can turn into a tankslapper if not checked, therefore in effect, dampers do prevent tankslppers. tankslappers and headshake are 2 different things, but they are 2 different degrees of the same thing; rapid steering oscilation

When customizing a motorcycle in California, do the accessories need to be DOT approved?

I want to customize my motorcycle with new lights, fairings, windshield, etc..
I have been looking at accessory sites and some of the items say “not DOT approved.”
I am in California and I want to make sure whatever customizations I do are legal.

Do I need to have all DOT approved accessories?

All the technical/mechanical parts need to be approved, fuzzy dice optional.

Motorcycle VIN# reference sheet for custom bikes?

I need to find an online database where I can punch in a motorcycle VIN# and it tells me which manufacturer made the bike. Anything that doesn't make you subscribe…

that might not give you a manufacturer, my bike is a custom the v.i.n. is an Arizona asighned number because I used Delkron cases and an Atlas frame. There is no manufacturer.I have ALL the receipts from the build in case I ever sell it.

Can you help me with some motorcycle advice?

I live in Nassau County, Long Island NY, and I am interested in buying a motorcycle. Which bikes would be good to learn on, where are good places for me to shop(new or used, as long as it's a good deal), and what kind of training should I go to?

Take an MSF course. If you feel that you're truely interested in riding after this course, then start with something small. Master a small bike before making a decision to buy a bigger bike that genrally would cost more to buy and more power to handle. People who master smaller bikes gain more skills than those who don't start on smaller bikes. Look into a 250 ninja to start out on. cheap to buy, not a pain in the ass to maintain, and when you've mastered that and you're ready to move up, the bike has pretty good resale value.

48 cylinder motorcycle (I DID NOT BUILD THIS BIKE)

I DID NOT BUILD THIS BIKE. It is a 48 cylinder, 4200cc engine made from s1/kh250 cylinders, by Simon Whitlock.
“Each motor is basically 8 “s1 /KH250″ cylinders bolted on to cut up standard casings, with a 8 cyl built up crank, in turn they are bolted to a housing, gear linked and driven thru a BMW road bike gearbox, as the bike is pretty long already it would be difficult to put a transverse drive thru a gearbox. It has taken almost three years of hard work and he has overcome some huge problems to get here - - where do you even start to think about building a bike like this? . . . Oh, by the way, Simon is not an engineer of any kind - he oversees the building of shopping precincts etc

Don’t look at it as a bike, look at it as a pure feat of engineering . . . and Simon built a Nitrous injected, fuel injected, water cooled, supercharged H1.
It has a small chainsaw motor under the seat that is used as the starter motor for the 48 cylinder motor. “The ignition is 6 x 8cyl E-Type Jaguar distributers.”

“Oh, and not only does it run - but it is rideable - JUST! - the engine and box alone weight just over a ton! ” Same guy has made several other multicylinder bikes of different types. Two of them are in the Barber Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham Ala. Largest and most complete motorcycle museum in the world. Look it up at www.barbermuseum.org
